Bafana Bafana have once again found themselves at the centre of controversy, this time over claims that the national team fielded 12 players during their recent international friendly against Nicaragua.
The incident was highlighted by former FIFA referee Victor Hlungwani, who pointed out during a television analysis that South Africa appeared to have 11 outfield players on the pitch, in addition to the goalkeeper, following a series of substitutions in the second half.
Neither match officials nor spectators appeared to notice the error at the time, with the match ending in a goalless draw.
The latest controversy comes at an uncomfortable time for SAFA and Bafana Bafana. In recent months, the national team has already faced criticism over administrative issues, including visa delays that disrupted travel plans and the controversy surrounding Teboho Mokoena's yellow card situation during the World Cup qualifying campaign.
Should FIFA investigate and determine that an extra player was indeed on the field, South Africa could face disciplinary action. Possible sanctions include the forfeiture of the match and a 3-0 victory being awarded to Nicaragua.
