Work at the eMadadeni Mall construction site was stopped on Wednesday after local contractors linked to the local business chamber raised concerns over contract opportunities on the project.

The chamber claims that more than 20 sub-contracting opportunities have been given to people from outside the area, while local contractors say they were expecting to be included in the development.

According to the chamber, this goes against expectations that the mall project would help empower contractors from the surrounding community.

The dispute has now disrupted work at the site as the chamber seeks clarity on how contracts are being allocated.

The matter is expected to require engagement between the chamber, the developer and other relevant stakeholders.
