Newcastle Airport may finally be getting a new lease on life.

Newcastle Municipality and Fuze Aviation Academy have joined forces to host the 2026 Newcastle Airshow, a major event expected to bring aviation activity, tourism and business interest back to the city.

For years, many residents have questioned the value of an airport that was built to serve Newcastle but has remained largely underused.

Now, the planned airshow is being positioned as more than just an entertainment event. It is expected to support tourism, create temporary job opportunities, expose young people to aviation careers and help revive interest in Newcastle Airport.

The project also forms part of the municipality’s broader Vision 2030 strategy, which focuses on investment, economic growth and positioning Newcastle as a more active regional hub.

If successful, the airshow could become an important step in showing that Newcastle Airport still has potential beyond being an unused public asset.

For residents, the bigger question is simple: could this be the beginning of finally putting the airport to work?
