Newcastle High School is preparing to say goodbye to one of its longest-serving leaders, with principal M Govender confirming that he will step down at the end of June after 18 years as headmaster.
In a letter to parents and guardians dated 10 June 2026, Govender formally announced his departure, saying he will leave his role on 26 June 2026.
From 1 July 2026, he will begin a new chapter as Chief Education Specialist: Circuit Management in Cape Town.
Govender described the move as a long-awaited career step, but admitted that leaving Newcastle High comes with mixed emotions after almost two decades of service to the school community.
For many learners, parents and staff, Govender’s leadership has been closely tied to the identity of Newcastle High over the years. In his letter, he reflected on the privilege of watching generations of pupils grow into young adults and go on to make their mark beyond the school gates.
He thanked parents for their trust and partnership, saying leading the “NEWIE” community had been the greatest honour of his professional life.
While his departure marks the end of an important chapter, Govender moved to reassure parents that the school’s future remains strong.
He said Newcastle High’s strength does not rest on one person, but on its dedicated teachers, pupils, School Governing Body and the foundations built over many years.
The school’s management team and SGB, with support from the Department of Education, are expected to guide the transition and ensure continuity after his departure.
To mark the occasion, Newcastle High will host a special farewell assembly on Thursday, 25 June 2026, at 11:30. Learners are expected to be present at school for the gathering.
Govender closed his message by thanking the school community for allowing him to be part of their children’s lives over the past 18 years, adding that he looks forward to watching Newcastle High continue to thrive.
